Everything you need to know before getting behind the wheel in Malaga
Spain drives on the right. Malaga’s roads range from the busy AP-7 coastal motorway to narrow mountain roads in the Sierra de Almijara. The traffic rules below apply across Malaga and the wider Andalusia region. Failure to comply can result in on-the-spot fines.
In Malaga city centre, parking is controlled by the ORA blue zone system. Pay-and-display machines accept coins and cards. Look for blue lines on the road. Maximum stay is typically 2 hours in central zones. Signs display hours of operation.
Underground car parks are available near the historic centre, the port (Muelle Uno), and at the main shopping centres. The Costa del Sol beach towns of Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, and Marbella have both paid surface car parks and free parking a short walk from the beach in residential streets.
Malaga and the Costa del Sol have excellent coverage of petrol stations. Available fuel types include Gasolina 95 and 98 (unleaded petrol), Gasóleo A (diesel), LPG, and increasingly EV charging points at larger stations. Major brands include Repsol, BP, Cepsa, and Carrefour stations at supermarkets.
24-hour stations are available along the AP-7 motorway, on the N-340 coast road, and near the airport on the A-7. Fill up before returning your rental car to avoid the rental company’s more expensive refuelling service. Payment by card and cash is accepted at all stations.
The AP-7 (also called the Costa del Sol motorway) from Malaga towards Estepona and the AP-46 Malaga ring road are toll roads. Tolls can be paid by cash or card at the barrier. The A-7 (N-340) runs parallel to the AP-7 and is a free alternative, though slower and more congested in summer.
If driving from Malaga to Seville, the AP-4 is also a toll motorway. For Malaga to Granada and Córdoba, the A-45 is toll-free. Check your rental contract — some cars are equipped with an electronic toll device. Unauthorised use of toll lanes can result in fines.
